Sorry to play into the stereotype of de Larrocha as a Mozart pianist, but the Mozartean quality of her playing in these pieces is the thing that makes these performances stand out. So many famous (and wonderful) pianists treat the "Emperor" as a precursor to the concerti of Brahms, Tchaikovsky, & Rachmaninov; de Larrocha treats it as a continuation of the Classical tradition. She was never a delicate "tinkle-tinkle" kind of pianist, but treated Mozart like a robust and vigorous composer who also had taste and refinement. Beethoven benefits from the same treatment. If you like "storming-the-heavens" Beethoven, I would recommend the terrific Zimerman/Bernstein/Vienna Philharmonic set. I love those performances too, but eventually found myself wishing for a little less thunder.
