Description

In June 1978 at the age of nineteen, Lebanese pianist and composer Abdel Rahman El Bacha won the Queen Elisabeth of Belgium Competition. Since then, El Bacha has enjoyed a busy concert schedule and has produced numerous acclaimed recordings. For his Mirare début, El Bacha performs the complete numbered Piano Sonatas of Ludwig van Beethoven. In making the recording, the pianist chose to play the sonatas in exact chronological order to maintain the arc of the composer's musical development. Mirare's specially-priced set features deluxe packaging and extensive liner notes.

El Bacha evidently doesn't think much of Schnabel's "safety last" prescription, for here's another set with cautious tempi that bear little relation to what the scores ask for, little drama, no hint of poetry, and not a trace of the wit and humor essential to so many movements (most obviously the first movement of Sonata 16). So I can't agree with the other reviewer that this set lets Beethoven speak for himself. As always with an interpretation, what we hear El Bacha speaking for himself, and I don't think he has much to say - especially compared to such alternatives (in complete sets) as Kovacevich, Korstick, Schnabel, Annie Fischer, Goodyear, Heidsieck et al.
