Description

Amazon.com Daniel Shafran seldom appeared in the West, but he was one of Russia's great cellists and recorded frequently there. The eminent pianist and teacher Yakov Fliere partners him in this enthusiastic 1956 recording of the Rachmaninoff Sonata,. Since this is Rachmaninoff, the pianist has most of the hard work. The Shostakovich, from 1946, was the first recording of that piece and has never been published outside Russia. Any opportunity to hear Shostakovich playing his own music is worth taking, since he was an excellent (if sometimes inaccurate) pianist. Here both players do splendidly, and the sound quality is better than you'd expect. --Leslie Gerber

I purchased this having heard the Rachmaninov cello sonata played by Daniil Shafran on radio 3 and while I'm not sure if this is the performance played on radio 3, frankly when its this good who cares. Daniil's cello is superb and special mention should be made for the piano accompaiment. Flyer has a beautifully judged touch on the Rachmaninov. and not unsurprisingly Shostakovich's performance on the Shostakovich Sonata for Cello and Piano is a joy to listen too. Amazingly the music on this disc is from recordings made in 1956 and 1946 but they don't sound like it. Although, it must be said that on first listening I thought that something was missing particularly in the upper end but on a second listen at a substantially higher volume everything sounds fine. An essential purchase.
