"Seon was among the first labels in the world devoted exclusively to recordings of classical music played on instruments and in the settings the composers themselves might have used. The (Seon) label is prized for the quality of both its musical interpretations and its recorded sound."This was enough to get me to pick up the disc, and give it a listen. The almost "high school gymnasium"sound of the Piano (not Piano Forte, which I am accustomed to) was initially a bit off-putting (this lasted about 45 seconds). The warmth and intimacy of the Baroque violin (Viola?) forms a mesmerizing and understated dialogue with the Piano. The performances show a restraint which enhances the composition in a manner which is rare. This is very different from a clean "pure"(almost cold) modern music hall rendition -- no pyrotechnics from the performers, just mood, nuance, and enjoyment of each pull of the bow or well timed plunk of a key.So enchanted I am mining the web for more information on these performers (Leonhardt, Sigiswald Kuijken), as well as the man who founded "Seon" in the late 1970's (Wolf Erichson).
