This collection provides a great insight into Prokofiev's enormous catalog of solo piano works. I purchased this compilation several years ago and have come back to it time and time again, having listened all the way through at least 20 times. I find new things every time I come back to it. There are many pianists who have put out recordings of the piano sonatas, or Visions Fugitives, or some of the other well known works, but I think the set's true value lies in some of the lesser known works, like the 6 Pieces (Op 52) or 3 Pieces (Op 96). (Incidentally, I think Prokofiev's Mephisto Waltz provides some real competition for Liszt's version). I love hearing references to other major works (the Prodigal Son/Fourth Symphony) in some of these pieces. One of the other standouts is the First Violin Sonata, which gives me chills every time I listen to it.Frederic Chiu's playing is truly phenomenal throughout. Voicing, clarity, pacing -- it's all there, all the time. Having played some of these works myself (the 3rd and 4th Sonatas, as well as the Visions Fugitives) I appreciate how truly difficult they are, but he makes it all seem effortless. Some performances are absolutely dizzying (the Mephisto Waltz) and make it clear that no, really -- he could play this even faster.I don't often write reviews on Amazon, but I would give this more than 5 stars if I only could. This collection is an absolute must-have for any Prokofiev aficionado.
