The four piano trios and the first of the three piano quartets cover a large part of the career of Johannes Brahms, ranging from the youthful Op.8 to the masterpiece of late Romantic that is Op.101. In the summer of 1880, twenty-six years after the composition of his first piano trio, Brahms simultaneously set to work on two more. While the work in E flat major remained a fragment and is now lost, the C major movement formed the initial material for the C major trio Op.87, completed in 1882. Typical of the mature Brahms, it shows how closely passion and the purest major key joy were still linked even in his last years. This repertoire is particularly close to the hearts of the Trio Wanderer, as is evident in this newly reissued recording from 2006.
