I've been sharpening my pocket, hunting, and kitchen knives for the last four decades. I used Natural Arkansas oil stones until about 12 years ago when I started using diamond stones for the coarse and fine sharpening stages but still finished with hard and black hard arkansas stones if I wanted a truly sharp edge. The Extra Fine side of this dia-Sharp bench stone doesn't give the edge the same polish as a black hard arkansas but it is still surprisingly sharp and smooth. This diamond stone will not replace a coarse stone for working on a neglected edge, but the Fine side cuts much faster than an Arkansas stone and is great for touching up a maintained edge. The Extra Fine side puts a very sharp and smooth edge that I suspect will be satisfactory for all but the most demanding needs. The diamond surface is on a heavy steel plate that is held securely on its stand with a full length magnet. You don't have to hold this bench stone to keep it steady and the stone is positioned high enough that there is plenty of knuckle room.
