We spent a lot of time on furniture sites and even in a few furniture stores trying to find a good storage bench, and this is nicer than any of the others we saw, with maybe the exception of leather ones. The hinges hold the lid open while you work and are smooth, quiet, and gentle (no slamming or jerking open). The top is particularly nice, with a stiff padding that should hold up for a long while, and the deep button tufting looks way more upscale than a flat top or no-button tufting.The only "assembly" needed was screwing the four feet on, and they went on clean and lined up well with the corners. The screw holes were threaded and the screws are hefty. The height is tall enough to make an extra dinner table seat, and that also gives you a lot of storage space. We were able to put 40 lb bags of birdseed in it without having to put them on their sides.And nicest of all, though hardest to see in an online photo, the material has a sort of tweedy texture to it (see photo) with a little bit of brown undertone in the gray that also looks nicely upscale.My only knock is that the base gave a little when we put the heavy bags in, so I wouldn't suggest going much heavier than 40 lbs per square foot.
